Laura is originally from Roswell, N.M. she was raised on a farm east of Roswell.  Laura knows the meaning of hard work.  She helped her Father with the chores; chopping cotton, cutting hay, feeding the animals, etc.  A year after she graduated from Roswell High School, she attended Oscar Rose Jr. College and Oklahoma Baptist University. 

In 1988,  while seeing Dr. Peggy Wisdom at Mercy Hospital, Laura learned about an 'experimental brain surgery' for people with epilepsy. She had been having seizures since age 2.  For some reason it became worse in her twenties instead of getting better.  Laura chose to  move to Seattle, WA to seek medical treatment for epilepsy; an option that had never been mentioned to her before. Not everyone with epilepsy would be willing to seek this kind of treatment. A 'brain surgery' is not something you take lightly. Although the odds were in her favor, there was considerable risk with this surgery.  Laura chose to sign the papers authorizing the doctors to proceed with the 'experimental surgery'. 

 If you wonder why she would be so willing to take the risk...read on!

In 1987, she had a seizure while deep fat frying, causing her to severely burn her right arm.   It will forever be scarred.  The doctors had to graft skin from both of her thighs just to cover the large area that was forever gone. For the next three years, she could not write with her right hand. She was unable to bring her thumb and fingers together, as in folding clothes, holding silverware, etc. According to Laura, the pain from the burn is indescribable. Like nothing she has ever experienced before. Anything she could do to prevent having to go through that again would be worth it! The risk of burning herself again would forever be there as long as there were seizures.

The results?

The 12 hour surgery was extremely successful! Thanks to Dr. George Ojeman, Neurosurgeon, and creator of the surgery itself! He performed the surgery along with 30 other doctors assisting him and at least 200 medical students observing one story above! They removed an area from her left temporal lobe the size of a small tangerine leaving very residual side affects.  At the time of the surgery, November 1989, the odds were as follows. 3% of the patients came out with no change. 94% changed for the better, but to different degrees. They could vary from 6% to 90% improvement. There were no guarantees. 3% of the patients thus far had come out completely seizure free. 

Because of the risk, Laura chose to take, and the faith she was willing to put in Dr. Ojeman and his staff, she is now one of the 3% that have come out 100% seizure free! Miracles do happen!

Note: (Dr. Ojeman started the 'crainiotomy for epilepsy' at Harbor View Hospital, in Seattle, WA. He has since retired, but has trained a staff that is carrying forward with his teachings. Thank you Dr. Ojeman!)

With a disability out of the way, Laura has been searching for what she wants to do with the rest of  her life.  She has worked in the medical field as a CNA/HHA for 10 years and continues to maintain her license.  She remembers what it was like to need assistance with daily things.  Laura feels that helping others is her debt to society.  She receives great joy in witnessing small accomplishments.

Her hope now is to witness major accomplishments as she helps individuals and businesses with their financial needs. Her new favorite motto:
